The Woman in Black (2012)

Set in the turn of the 20th century, the movie "The Woman in Black" opens with Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer reeling under the grief of his wife, Stella, who died during child delivery. Smitten by his misfortune and with financial constraints, Arthur is given one last opportunity to redeem his career. He is sent to the rural village of Crythin Gifford to attend to the estate of the late Alice Drablow.

Arthur lands in this remote, mist-shrouded village and shortly starts to sense fear in the villagers. They do not wish to talk of the abandoned mansion, Eel Marsh House, belonging to the recently deceased Alice Drablow, which stands on marshland accessible only by a causeway submerged at high tide. None of this deters Arthur, and he takes residence in the house to sort through Alice's papers. As Arthur starts to work, he begins to feel strange things in the house: strange noises, shadows in the corners of his eye, and a woman in all black. Every time Arthur catches a glimpse of her, something terrible happens, like the tragic deaths of the children in the village. In desperation to save their remaining children, the villagers hark back once again to the tragedies befalling them to Arthur's arrival in the village.

Determined through incensedness to get to the root of what really was happening, Arthur continued his research about Eel Marsh House and its previous occupants. He finds that Jennet Humfrye, sister to Alice Drablow, had a son out of wedlock. She was considered unfit to raise him, and the boy was taken from her, raised by Alice. He later died in a tragic marsh accident when his carriage sank in the quicksand as Jennet watched helplessly from the shore. Jennet, heartbroken and consumed by rage, then hanged herself in the nursery of Eel Marsh House. Since this time, she has haunted the house and the village as the vengeful Woman in Black, bringing death to children whenever she appears. But the more he learned about the horrific truth, the more desperate Arthur became to break the curse. He came to realize that Jennet would only be appeased when her child's body was reunited with her and thus put an end to her reign of terror. He retrieves the boy's body from the marsh with the help of a local, Samuel Daily, whose child became another victim of the Woman in Black, and buries him along with Jennet.

Arthur thinks the curse is finally lifted and prepares his return to London, where he hopes to start afresh with his young son Joseph. But then the story takes a sad turn as Arthur and Joseph are at the train station, ready to leave. The Woman in Black makes one of the most terrifying plot twists of all time, making one final appearance, luring Joseph onto the tracks just as an oncoming train approaches. Arthur races against time in order to try and save his son but is too late. Arthur and Joseph are both killed by the oncoming train. The movie ends with a poignantly sweet note. Arthur reunites with Joseph and Stella in the afterlife as they walk hand in hand into the light, releasing themselves from the worldly darkness. The final shot, however, returns to the empty train station as the Woman in Black stands silently in it, her vengeance unfulfilled, implying her curse will claim many more innocent lives.
