Water Monster (2019)
Water Monster begins in a serene rural setting wherein a father and his young son set on a quiet fishing trip. The picturesque scene very soon turns into a terrible nightmare as the boy's father is brutally attacked by a monstrous creature and killed, also referred to as "water monkey." This gruesome scene introduces a decade of peace finally torn apart by the same terror that took the father's life.
A decade later, the grown-up son, Lincheng Liu, grew up with the ghost of that fateful day in his head. Returned to his village with his loved Lilan Zhu, he is quietly determined to safeguard her and his home from lurking danger. The serenity of village life was shattered sooner or later with the arrival of the water monkey, which perpetrated a series of brutal attacks on the villagers. Chaos erupts in a tranquil village as Lincheng is pushed to the front in this fight against the water monkey. Confused and terror-stricken, villagers look up to Lincheng for guidance. He must team up with Lilan and a small detachment of determined villagers through impassioned appeals to bring the community together against the monster menace.
The people struggle with much danger: the water monkey proves to be an elusive and wily foe, and the attempts of villagers are set back many times as its attacks become more and more deadly. Lincheng shows leadership, weighing personal fears against the need to protect his people. As the battle intensifies, Lincheng learns of the grim origins that brought the Water Monkey into the world. It is among ancient texts and old legends that he finds the creature to be the manifestation of many-centuries-old curses which have plagued that region since time immemorial. This revelation puts a layer of urgency on their battle, as the water monkey is not just a beast but a force of malevolent magic.
Lincheng and his companions devise a plan: audacious, bold, and to directly face the water monkey. The final confrontation is staged in the middle of a fog-shrouded lake where the water monkey's power is at its height. The fight is fierce and full of danger, for Lincheng and his comrades fight the beast in a desperate fight for survival. The fighting is so intense, and it looks like the water monkey might just be a tad too strong to kill. However, through some form of bravery and sacrifice, Lincheng and villagers manage to defeat the creature. All this comes to a heart-stopping climax when Lincheng faces the water monkey head-on, using cunning and bravery in ways that pay off to triumph over the monstrous foe.
The water monkey is finally defeated; the village cleans up the pieces and gets back to normal living. Lincheng and Lilan emerge from the affair scarred but victorious. The film ends on a hopeful note as the village tries to get over its traumatic experience, with Lincheng and Lilan looking to a future free of dark shadows of experiences. Lincheng reflects on the strength of the community, the bond of love and resilience that has driven them to conquer what may have been their darkest moments.
