The film stitches together a tapestry of comedic bedlam with fatherhood, rivalry, and the ties that bind. Although "Daddy's Home" got mixed reviews from the critics, the film still managed to bring in extraordinary success at the box office, which raked in a worldwide gross amount of $242.8 million. As Dusty gets back into the family, tensions rise when he starts challenging Brad's authority and making attempts to win his ex-wife, Sara, played by Linda Cardellini. Things remain particularly insecure for Brad regarding his stepfather role, even more so as the kids start to warm up with Dusty's natural charisma and adventurous spirit, and even Brad's boss. This rivalry brews between Brad and Dusty, who continue to one-up each other in outlandish, hilarious competitions to be the better father figure. The competitions go from motorcycle racing to basketball games, right to a chainsaw fight-out, with each activity resulting in hilarious, over-the-top antics. Through it all, Brad tries to keep control of things and discipline inside the home, but Dusty messes it all up and disrupts Brad's perfectly sculpted family dynamic. Much of Brad's insecurities and wanting to be a good step-dad drive many of the story's humor and conflict.
As the competition between Brad and Dusty reaches its zenith, both men are forced to confront their own inadequacies and insecurities. Through all the comic misadventures and silly challenges, they realize their competitiveness grows out of a mutual love for the children and a wish to become exemplary fathers. Eventually, Brad and Dusty bury their differences and work together to get the children out of harm's way. Their new collaboration marks a change for both personas vis-Ã -vis family interests. "Daddy's Home" is one of those comedies which chronicled in light-hearted manner how families, fatherhood and complicated relationships of blended families face hard times. Quick-witted, it had several memorable performances and touching moments that kept the audiences light while its message remained poignant on acceptance, compromise, and the transformation that love can bring into not-so-conventional families.
