Tersanjung the Movie (2021)

Tersanjung the Movie opens with the story of Yura Puspita, a young woman who leads a humble life, fighting not only her daily struggles but also against the hardships of her living situation. Her father is emotionally abusive, commanding, and deeply indebted, ordering Yura to help pay it off. The mother is sick and gives little support, thus making her feel all alone and helpless against her fate.

Yura is in love with Oka, a rich man who promises her a better life. Her father warns her that Oka is not to be trusted, but she believes he is her way out of this miserable life. When he learns of the pregnancy, Oka abandons Yura. Heartbroken and in despair, Yura is left to face the consequences of her relationship with Oka, and she has absolutely no avenue on which to turn.

Now enter two of Yura's childhood friends, Sapta and Toni, who have always been there for her. Sapta is a gentle, warm man who has loved Yura in secret all these years. Meanwhile, Toni is more mischievous and playful but is deeply committed to Yura. Both take a step forward for her when they find out what has happened to her. Overwhelmed with grief, at loss with what to do in the future, grateful for such support, yet conflicted with these polar opposites are what Yura feels.

As events unfold, Yura's pregnancy becomes the hub of her existence. Meanwhile, she has immense pressures from her father-who is more vitally concerned with the shame her pregnancy brings into the family rather than her personal well-being. On the opposite end, Sapta and Toni remain steadfast in standing by her side as she faces these personal and physical emotional struggles. Yura then begins to understand how deep Sapta's feelings are for her and slowly starts to lean on him as a steady rock.

Things get complicated, however, when Oka reappears in her life, regretting what he has done and wanting to be included in their child's and Yura's life now. It puts Yura in a dilemma. Torn between giving a second chance to Oka for the sake of the child and moving ahead with Sapta, who has been the constant source of comfort and love, this emotional conflict forms the crux of Yura's internal struggle.

The climax is that Yura has to make a very important choice in her life. Oka promises her a comfortable future-with financial stability-but Sapta offers love and friendship as the base of life. Yura is in a dilemma but, after much soul-searching, realizes that the love and loyalty of people mean more than materialistic wealth. Then, she chooses Sapta; for the sake of true happiness and emotional security, she refuses Oka's proposal.

In the final shots, Yura gives birth, and Sapta is in the delivery room. They become parents together, hand in hand, the possibility of a new future unfolding. The acquaintance that was Toni becomes the close friend standing to right the wrongs from their first attempt. The film ends on a note when Yura gets to be at peace and finally relax from all the pain that had been brought upon her; she accepts that her future will be founded on love, friendship, and resilience.
