Despite a mixed critical reception with an IMDb rating of 5.3/10, a Rotten Tomatoes score of 28% and a Metacritic rating of 41%, the film resonated with audiences and received a 64% approval rating from Google users. Drawing from the ancient myth of La Llorona, the film plunges Anna into a terrifying realm where evil forces blur the lines between reality and superstition. Warner Bros. and Warner Bros. Distributed by Pictures, "The Curse of La Llorona" proved a commercial success, grossing $123.1 million worldwide. Produced by James Wan, Gary Dauberman and Emile Gladstone, the film cleverly weaves bilingual English-Spanish dialogue into its narrative, enhancing the story's atmospheric tension and cultural richness. With a running time of 1 hour and 34 minutes, the audience is taken on a suspenseful journey into the depths of horror and legend.

The film is set in 1973 in Los Angeles and follows social worker Anna Tate-Garcia, who is investigating the case of Patricia Alvarez, a mother who has seemingly abused her children. Anna intervenes and places Patricia's two sons in protective custody, but Patricia warns her about the curse of La Llorona. Later that night, Anna encounters La Llorona when she tries to take Patricia's children to a shelter. La Llorona attacks Anna and her own children, Chris and Samantha, marking them with her curse. From that moment on, Anna and her children become targets of the vengeful spirit.  As the haunting escalates, Anna seeks the help of a former priest turned curandero named Rafael Olvera. Rafael explains that La Llorona is a legendary ghost who drowned her children in a fit of jealous rage and now seeks to claim the souls of other children to replace her own. Despite Rafael's efforts to protect them, Anna and her children continue to be tormented by La Llorona's malevolent presence. The ghost appears in various forms and manipulates the environment to terrorize them, leaving them desperate for a way to break the curse.

Anna realizes that La Llorona's power lies in her connection to water, and she attempts to use this knowledge to her advantage. With Rafael's guidance, she devises a plan to trap La Llorona and stop her reign of terror once and for all. In a climactic showdown, Anna lures La Llorona into a trap using a pool of water as bait. With the help of her children and Rafael, she performs a ritual to weaken the ghost and send her back to the afterlife. Despite their efforts, La Llorona proves to be a formidable adversary, and the confrontation becomes a life-or-death struggle. In the end, Anna manages to outsmart La Llorona and banish her from the mortal realm, breaking the curse and saving her family. The film concludes with Anna and her children moving on from the traumatic experience, but the threat of La Llorona's curse lingers in their memories. As they rebuild their lives, they remain vigilant against the forces of darkness that seek to harm them.
