The Love of a Deceased Mother for Her Two Child
"Mama" begins in the dark days of 2008 during the financial crisis. Jeffrey Desange, overcome by despair, commits a horrific crime, killing his business partners and estranged wife before abducting his two young daughters, Victoria and Lilly. He drives them deep into the woods to a remote cabin with the grim intention of ending their lives and his own. Just as he's about to carry out his plan, a supernatural force intervenes, killing Jeffrey and sparing the girls. This force, an eerie maternal figure they come to call "Mama," takes care of them.
Fast forward five years, and Jeffrey's brother Lucas has never stopped searching for his nieces. Miraculously, Victoria and Lilly are found alive but have become feral after years of isolation. Victoria, the older sister, shows some willingness to rejoin society, while Lilly, having been very young when they were abandoned, remains wild and animalistic.
Lucas and his girlfriend, Annabel, take in the girls, and with the help of Dr. Dreyfuss, a psychologist intrigued by their case, they try to provide them with a normal life. Dr. Dreyfuss becomes especially fascinated by the girls' stories of "Mama," who they say protected and cared for them in the cabin. As they all settle into their new life, strange and increasingly terrifying events unfold in their home. Annabel, who initially struggles with her new role as a caretaker, begins to encounter a malevolent presence. It's clear that "Mama" has followed the girls to their new home and is fiercely protective and possessive of them.
Dr. Dreyfuss delves deeper into the mystery of Mama, uncovering a tragic backstory. Mama was once Edith Brennan, a mental asylum patient who escaped to save her baby. Cornered by authorities, she jumped off a cliff with her child. Edith died, but her baby was caught on a branch and survived. Edith's spirit, now Mama, has been searching for her baby ever since, and when she found Victoria and Lilly, she adopted them as her own.The tension escalates as Mama's aggression towards Annabel and Lucas grows. This culminates in a violent confrontation that lands Lucas in the hospital. Annabel, who has come to genuinely care for the girls, decides to confront Mama. The final showdown occurs at the cliff where Mama died. Mama tries to take the girls with her into the afterlife, but Victoria, who has come to love Annabel, persuades Mama to let her go. Lilly, still deeply attached to Mama, chooses to go with her. Mama and Lilly transform into butterflies and disappear, leaving a heartbroken Victoria and a grieving Annabel and Lucas behind.
The movie closes with a bittersweet recognition of the love between Mama and the children, and the new, strong bond formed between Annabel and Victoria. Mama's fate serves as a haunting reminder of unresolved sorrow and undying maternal instinct. "Mama" is a haunting tale that explores themes of family, loss, and the enduring power of a mother’s love, even from beyond the grave.
