It is a diary novel told through the narration of Benjamin. Born in 1918, Benjamin is special because he ages backward. As a baby, he had the physical appearance of an elderly man, and as he grows older, he gets physically younger. His father, Thomas Button - played by Jason Flemyng - is horrified by the appearance of his son and leaves him at a nursing home. He is taken under her wing by Queenie, a caretaker who takes him in and raises him as her own. It is here that a close friendship develops between Benjamin and Daisy, granddaughter of one of its residents. As Benjamin gets younger and older, he spends his life on several journeys, such as serving in the World War II and working on a tugboat. Through the decades, he and Daisy bump into each other at various junctions of their lives. However, their reverse aging presents difficulties in their relationship.
As Benjamin gets younger, Daisy grows older, and all these problems create emotional hurdles and such poignant moments shared between the two. His condition gives him the chance to see life and the time passing by in a whole different way. The film considers themes of love and death and aging. At the last stages, he turns into a baby and goes away with a peaceful death. The story ends with Daisy reading the diary to her dying mother, showing how life is full circle.
