18:04(UTC) Tuesday, October 1, 2024 - Israel – In a dramatic escalation, Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel in the early hours of the morning, launching more than 200 in an attack never seen before and sending the country's sirens into action. The majority were intercepted by Israeli defenses, but several hit their mark. Only two people reportedly received shrapnel injuries, while several others received treatment for minor injuries and shock.
The IDF quickly responded, alerting citizens to seek shelter as the missile barrage began. From Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, sirens are blaring across major cities. One hour later, the IDF said the immediate threat had passed and civilians were advised they could leave bomb shelters-though they were urged to remain vigilant.

IDF Spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said that although "there were indeed impacts in central and southern Israel", the situation was under control, adding "we do not know of any serious casualties". "During the defense, we carried out several interceptions. We are still assessing the full scope of the attack but at this stage, we are unaware of significant damage or casualties," he said.
Hagari warned, even as hostilities stopped immediately after the attack, that Israel would retaliate for the Iranian attack: "This missile fire will have consequences. We are on heightened alert for both defensive and offensive operations and will respond at a time and place of our choosing."
Global Reaction and White House Response
As the situation grew more heated, U.S. President Joe Biden wasted no time in commanding the U.S. military to support Israel. The White House said Biden, along with Vice President Kamala Harris, was closely following the situation from the Situation Room, receiving minute-by-minute briefings from national security advisers. U.S. forces were ordered to intercept any additional missiles at large cities in Israel.
Iran's IRGC claimed responsibility for the missile strikes, warning any Israeli retaliation would be met with a "more crushing and ruinous" response. The attack was one of the most significant escalations in tensions between Israel and Iran in recent years.
Closings of Airspace and International Consequences
Missiles sent the air travel of Israel into chaos. An announcement by the Airports Authority closed the Ben Gurion International Airport to all incoming and outgoing flights, redirecting them to other destinations.
